SDTC 2009 Participant Rules

Welcome
On Oct. 25, 2009, come out and experience a half-Ironman distance event that will change your life! You'll be competing side by side with world-class challenged athletes, professional triathletes, celebrities and able-bodied participants on one of the most breathtaking courses in the country. This event is fun for the whole family and serves as a primary fundraiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Over the past 16 years, this event has helped raise over $20 million to support over 3,800 challenged athletes.

Entry Requirements
The San Diego Triathlon Challenge course is a difficult, hilly course that weaves through North County San Diego. Participants should be able to complete the course by 5 pm on race day. The course is not closed and participants should be able to ride in traffic and must obey all traffic laws. Due to safety concerns, CAF also reserves the right to require a certain level of athletic experience before allowing challenged athletes to participate in the event.

The Course
An extraordinary journey up the coastline and through the lush San Diego countryside:
1.2 mile ocean swim beginning and ending at La Jolla Cove
56 mile challenging and hilly bike ride
13.1 mile hilly run from La Jolla Cove to Torrey Pines State Park and back
The course is not closed and participants should be able to ride and run in traffic and must obey all traffic laws.
Distances are approximate and not certified.

Expo & Entertainment
The CAF Village – An expo full of cool vendors, food and fun. Come sample goods, see new products and win great prizes.
Wawanesa Family Fun Zone – Kids will have fun on the amazing inflatable jumpies, the surf simulator, a sports zone, carnival games, face painters and more!

Silent Auction
Located in the CAF Village. Come make a bid on lots of fantastic items. You can get a great trip at a great price and help a challenged athlete make it to the starting line.

Goodie Bag
Receive a goodie bag with awesome athletic gear worth over $350. This includes items like athletic apparel, towels, shoes, gym bag, and so much more. You can pick up your goodie bag on Saturday Oct. 24 at registration, at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

Fundraising Rules
1. A $300 nonrefundable, nontransferable to the next year, deposit is required to sign up as an individual. A $250 nonrefundable, nontransferable to the next year, deposit is required to sign up for each relay team member. You must provide your credit card information as a guarantee. The full entry fee of $600/individual or $1,500/relay team is due Aug. 15, 2009.
2. Your credit card may be charged for any remaining entry fee balance if unpaid by Aug 16, 2009.
3. Raise $500 ABOVE your entry fee ($600 for Individual fee and $600 to Relay Team member fee) by OCT 1st, 2009 and receive a Fleece jackets. All funds MUST be in to CAF no later than Oct. 1st 2009 in order to be eligible.
3.a. Raise $2500 ABOVE your entry fee ($600 for Individual fee and $600 to Relay Team member fee) by OCT 12th, 2009 and be part of the Gold Team. See Gold Team information on the mail SDTC web site.

4. Please send your fundraising dollars to the CAF office as you receive them. Please make checks payable to the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Be sure to clearly mark your name on the donations/checks you send in and we will track your progress.
5. Fundraising dollars towards prizes are over and above your entry fee.
6. If your prize is $600 or greater in value, you might be subject to pay taxes on it, and you will be required to fill out an IRS Form W-9 before recieving your gift.
7. You can only choose one fundraising prize and they are not cumulative.
8. Winners may substitute a prize from a lower level.
9. CAF reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.
10. Donated product does not count towards your fundraising goal unless the CAF was going to purchase that product anyway. Fundraising credit would be for the price CAF was going to pay. Prior approval must be received from the CAF Executive Director.
11. A $20 fee will be charged for all returned (insufficient funds) checks.
12. All fundraising dollars must be in by 5:00 pm. Pacific Time on Dec. 1, 2009 in order to be eligible for fundraising prizes offered for the 2009 SDTC.
13. All those pursuing the 2010 Hawaii Ironman Slot must sign off on their fundraising total by 5:00 pm October 21, 2009.
14. Ironman slot shall be awarded to the first fundraisers who has raised a minimum of $30,000 or greater and who complete the entire SDTC course (i.e.: who participates in the full event as an individual). Such slot is non-transferable.
15. To qualify for fundraising prizes you must participate in the San Diego Triathlon Challenge.
16. If you want to sell sponsorship for the SDTC as part of your fundraising strategy, you must notify the CAF Executive Director, Virginia Tinley. She can provide you with Sponsorship packages, which you can present to potential sponsors. She will also let you know if another participant is pursuing the same company. The first person to bring in the sponsor will receive fundraising credit.
17. You may pursue grant-writing on behalf of CAF. You must send in the complete written proposal to Virginia Tinley, CAF's Executive Director for approval and signature. We reserve the right to deny submission if it is not written according to CAF's guidelines.
18. All corporate matching funds must be in our office no later than Dec. 1, 2009. We will accept a written letter from your company stating the exact amount that will be distributed and the date it will be sent. All checks must be in to the CAF office no later than Dec. 1, 2009 in order to count for your 2009 fundraising.
19. We will refund 50% of your full entry fee if you become injured prior to the event (with doctor’s verification).
20. Entry fee for next year can’t be subtracted from fundraising over amount raised for fundraising prize. You can opt for entry into next year’s race in lieu of a fundraising prize.
21. If you choose an incentive prize, funds raised above your entry fee cannot be applied to next year's event. You may choose entry into next year's event insted of a fundraising prize, provided you raise enought above your 2009 entry fee to cover the cost of the registration.
22. Relay teams can combine their fundraising dollars to get one joint prize, or they may fundraise individually (the only prize exempt from relay team members is the Ironman spot).
23. Your fundraising total must be $1,000 or greater, above your registration fee by Sept. 1, 2009 in order to recieve a promotional prize.
